When we think of food waste we usually think of the end – the brown bin, the compost heap, clearing out the fridge. But really, the reasons we waste food occur before this point. By making small changes to how we plan, shop and prepare food we can cut our food waste and save money at the same time. Reducing food waste should start before we even go to the shops!
Many of us are aware that we waste food but very few of us realize just how much. But what food are wasted most? Without understanding what food you waste, it is hard to make the right changes.
Did you know that Romania throws away 2,55 million tons of food annually, more specifically 129 kg/person? From this 24% is cooked food, 22% fruit, 21% vegetables and 1% meat. We spend 40% of our income on food, and 33% - 50% of it goes directly to the trash.
